I remember seeing this label at Beachwood Market when I was in High School. It’s been hanging there since 1973 as far as I can recall. I was surprised to see it was still there after all these years when we paid a visit to the market last week.
Note that Exeter was the home of the Visalia Electric RR, an SP subsidiary (like PE). The car on the label looks like nothing PE or VE ever ran, although if PE had ordered new cars after World War II they could have looked somewhat like that. Noted traction modeler Bill Everett made a “PE 2000-class” O-scale model illustrating his vision of a next-generation Red Car. I once had a dream about riding a “PE 5300-class” train from Monrovia to Irwindale on the Santa Fe route; at least part of this dream is coming true with the construction of the Gold Line Foothill Extension. If you can imagine a car with elements of a PCC, a Hollywood car, and a Cleveland rapid transit unit, that’s a “5300”. Now if LA Metro will just paint their new cars red, with yellow-orange striping……
