N Line Construction
A Los Angeles Transit Lines (ex-Los Angeles Railway) N Line streetcar no. 1242 passes over a construction zone at a busy intersection. The car’s destination board reads “N / 6th & Western.” Another LATL streetcar passes in the background.

This car was heading West Bound on 8th St. at Vermont Ave. New
rail curves were being installed to reroute the S Line here when the
N Line was abandoned. Note the overhead wire is up but the tracks
and switches have not yet been installed.
Great photos! The N Line has just come out from downtown: Spring and Sunset, south to 9th St., turns West on 9th and travels to Vermont, turns North on Vermont to 8th St. then turns West on 8th(the photo) to Western Ave. The N Line was converted to bus in 1950 with the S Line taking over the final few blocks from Vermont to Western. The photo shows the work needed to bring the S Line over from 7th to 8th. I lived at 8th and Normandie from 1938 to 1956(L.A. High-1955). My Dad was a Pullman Conductor on the Sunset Ltd. I was born in New Orleans, moved to L.A. When my Dad’s train was moved from SP/UP Central Sta. in 1939 to the new L.A.U.P.T., the N Line was to serve the new station in the loop at the North end. My Dad wanted to find us a place on the carline to the station…so we ended up at Normandie. In New Orleans we lived on 1st St. between St. Charles and Carondolet streets, near St. Charles and Jackson. This allowed my Dad to take the St. Charles car to the “IC Station”(as we called it). I was born in a hospital on Napoleon and Freret with the Napolean carline in front. Some time in the 1940s the F Line was given the Union P.T. and the N Line terminated at Spring and Sunset. Later, a loop was installed at 8th and Western and PCCs took over. CHEERS!
