I’ve tried to reconcile this view with what I recall of the landforms and the amount of development at Valley Junction itself, and I can’t. I think Paul may be right, and this is a view of that stretch of track near what is now the southern edge of the campus of CSULA. If it’s the view westward, which I think is most likely, then Ramona Boulevard would have been on the other side of the hill in the foreground, and the white buildings in the right background must have been along a now-vanished street called Barnett Road. That it’s a view eastward seems less likely to me, as I don’t recall any buildings the size of those in that neighborhood, even decades after the line ceased operation.
After looking at this picture for the last 15 months and doing some comparisons with the website “Historic Aerials”, I believe we are looking NE and that the gulley with the culvert now holds the 710 Freeway. I think Ramona Blvd is beyond the right edge of the picture and that it curves into the picture, but since the road is at a low elevation we can’t see it because of the railway embankment.
I agree with Paul, and I’m also sure that the culvert is right in the middle of what is now the Long Beach Freeway. Having run on it many times for the SP and Amtrak, there is no other place with a gulch like that anywhere between Valley Junction and El Monte.
The car has the 1940’s paint job, and it doesn’t appear to have a blackout shade on the headlight. Last passenger service on this line only to (Baldwin Park) was on Oct. 17, 1950.
I think this is east of Eastern Avenue on the San Bernardino Line.

Anyone have an idea what year this photo might have been taken in?

Yes, I believe the exact location of this shot is where the 710 and 10 fwy intersect. The Metrolink now runs on this same right of way.
