I’m sure others have noticed but thought not to bother with mentioning it but the car number is actually 1362, not 1632. Great Archive!

According to Interurbans Special 37, this car started out as 1043, was converted to a combine in the 1930’s, and reverted to 1043 and full passenger configuration in the 1940’s. In its combine days, it did not have passenger steps at the other end. This may have also necessitated moving the motorman’s controls to the middle of the cab.

As PE #1043 running Santa Ana-Orange, pictured (Magna Collection) outbound at Watts in 1931 (Special 60 page 166 top..see also Special 16). [Not yet converted to PE #1362.] Note-Passenger services from Santa Ana out to Orange discontinued 14 Sept. 1930 and rails removed.

Reference Model Railroader April 1958 pages 56-57 article “PE’s 1000-class interurbans” for discussion of the conversions.
