Freeway Vantage Point

A pair of Metropolitan Transit Authority (ex-Pacific Electric) blimps cross 15th Street at the north end of the Four Tracks section of the Long Beach Line. We believe that this view was taken from the yet to be completed Santa Monica Freeway bridge that crossed over the Four Tracks at 15th Street. Los Angeles City Hall is clearly seen in the distance. The date is April 19, 1961.

This area was sometimes called “Whistle Alley” because of the large number of grade crossings. Also, the date shown would have been after the abandonment of this line.

I believe the train is crossing Newton Street, it is between East 15th Street and 14th Street. The two story brick building, with the three windows across the top floor, just behind the train is still there and in use. The Furniture Guild of California to the left of the photo is long gone.
