I wish I could go back in time and check if both ends had the fancy “after market” pilot or if just one end was upgraded possibly due to an accident.
And all these decades later, there’s still a Richfield (okay, Atlantic-Richfield, a.k.a. ARCO) gas station on the southwest corner!
I guess this location is now part of the Expo line.
Evidently this wasnt the ‘franchise’ car but a major event. Does anyone know the occasion or the date?
PE ran the 1200s on the Airline to handle the extra traffic due to a LATL strike.
It does look like ” Santa Monica via Air Line” was rather hastily hand lettered. Was this a rush to get the carsswitched over to the service?
Taken by Robert X. Loewing, himself a P.E. Motorman (Western District). Two 1200-class cars were assigned to the S.M. Air Line during a strike at L.A.T.L. in 1949. The question of the pilots was also looked at here: https://www.pacificelectric.org/pacific-electric/western-district/the-life-and-times-of-pacific-electric-1260/
