5028 in Atwater

Pacific Electric PCC no. 5028 glides in the Atwater district on June 10, 1955, in this classic Alan K. Weeks photo. The PCC is unhampered by auto traffic.

Just days later, the line would be abandoned, and buses would be mired in auto traffic below this line’s former right of way.

Looks like Glendale Blvd at LA River / Atwater. Hyperion bridge is in the background.

The photo is looking southwest down Glendale Boulevard from Greensward Road.

On further review, Alan was shooting from Hollydale Drive.

The photo looks like it was taken from where the 76 gas station is now…

As a lifelong Atwater resident, I can confirm that this photo was taken from the location of the old Beaches Market. Great historical document capturing a forgotten history of Atwater

And the street was Glenhurst. The gas station was/is on the other side of the street at the intersection. My childhood friends, Mike and Steve Tate, were the sons of the station owner. Can’t recall what brand the station was back then. Only original business on that stretch of Glendale Blvd. is Club TeeGee, the local watering hole. I grew up on Gardena Ave, the first street on the Glendale side of the SP railroad tracks. Rode the PE into the Subway Terminal until the last week in June 1955
